Origins of the Da Lat Cherry Blossom Festival

The famous Da Lat Cherry Blossom Festival is held every spring to honor the brilliant and graceful beauty of these flowers. When cherry blossoms bloom, the streets of Da Lat are adorned in romantic pink hues. The breathtaking natural scenery, resembling a painting, brings many emotions to visitors exploring Da Lat.

Many documents suggest that cherry blossoms originally came from a wild species growing in the mountainous regions of Japan. In the 1960s, Southern agricultural scientists contacted Japanese genetic institutions to bring these flower varieties to the South Central Highlands region (present-day Da Lat).

It is estimated that Da Lat currently has over 80,000 cherry blossom trees, with approximately 2,000 trees concentrated around Tuyen Lam Lake and major city streets such as: Le Dai Hanh Street, Lasapinet, Ho Tung Mau, Tran Hung Dao, Dang Thai Than, Phan Nhu Thach, and within the grounds of coffee shops, colleges, and the Western Highlands Institute of Biology.

Currently, there are over 2,000 cherry blossom trees in downtown Da Lat, with the highest concentration around Xuan Huong Lake and other streets. Cherry blossoms are among the most beloved flowers, attracting numerous domestic and international tourists who come to admire them during the blooming season.

Therefore, in recent years, this flower species has been given special attention for development throughout Da Lat. The beauty of cherry blossoms represents the beauty of Da Lat city itself. The first Da Lat Cherry Blossom Festival was planned for 2017 but had to be postponed because the flowers hadn’t bloomed in time. After two schedule changes, the Lam Dong Provincial People’s Committee held detailed discussions and decided to proceed with organizing the 2018 Cherry Blossom Festival along streets where the flowers were in full bloom.

When participating, visitors not only get to admire the beauty of cherry blossoms but can also enjoy many interesting experiences such as the Marathon around Tuyen Lam Lake, a Golf tournament, a Cherry Blossom Festival logo design competition, a cherry blossom photography contest, and cherry blossom and love music nights.

The Da Lat Cherry Blossom Festival typically takes place from February 11th to 13th each year, as this is when cherry blossoms are in full bloom, painting Da Lat’s roads and tourist areas in beautiful shades of pink.

Sometimes the festival is delayed if the flowers haven’t bloomed yet or if there aren’t enough blooms to properly host the Cherry Blossom Festival for visitors.
